Glenn Towery
“Using the Arts to Heal Veterans and Military Personnel”

Glenn Towery is a decorated Vietnam combat veteran of the United States Navy who is also an  award winning screenplay writer, filmmaker, actor, composer, editor, visual artist and author.  He is the founder and presently serves as the chairman of the Veterans Suicide Prevention  Channel (VSPChannel) and is the creator of the Austin Veteran Arts Festival (AVAFEST). 

In 1997, Glenn graduated from, Columbia College Hollywood at the age of 45, in Los Angeles,  CA earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in film and television production while becoming the first  valedictorian of color in Columbia College Hollywood’s more than 60-year history. Currently,  Glenn is producing a television dramatic series about healing veterans entitled “MISSION:  TRANSITION CONDITION.” MISSION: TRANSITION CONDITION” may become the  first ever dramatic series in the history of television about healing veterans. His production  company is Fairy GodBrother Productions & Film Company, LLC. Glenn has won multiple  awards as a screenplay writer for his feature length films. 

Glenn has a 50-year history in community theater in Los Angeles where he worked with and  learned from many of the greats such as Edmund James Cambridge, C. Bernard Jackson, Ted  Lange, Marla Gibbs, Juanita Moore, Robert Hooks and others whose names are easily  recognized as stars and celebrities of that era. He served as the Executive Producer of the  “Spectrum Theater Company” in Austin, Texas during Covid-19 from 2020 - 2021. He facilitated  the rebuilding of their new website and directed/produced the online production of “THE  PEOPLE COULD FLY.” Spectrum Theater Company is Austin’s only Black Theater Company.  It was founded by Glenn’s former mentor and friend, the late Dr. Billy Harden

In 2016, Glenn created the famed SUICIDE PREVENTION OFFICER program that was  adopted in part by the DAV, VFW and the Military Order of the Purple Heart. Glenn also became  the very first SUICIDE PREVENTION OFFICER of a Congressionally Chartered VSO in  the nation when he was appointed to that position during the DAV Texas State Convention by  Retired General and DAV Texas State Commander, Charles Edwards, in 2016. 

In 2017, Glenn helped create the very first RACE BASED STRESS and TRAUMA PTSD  Group (RBST group) at the Austin Veterans Medical Center as a safe space for veterans of  color to heal from military racist experiences. RBST therapy groups for veterans of color can  now be found at VA facilities throughout the United States of America.  

In 2022, Glenn was awarded a Congressional Commendation for his work with veterans from  US Congressional Representative John Carter. On May 30, 2023, Glenn was part of a  12-person round table discussion that was chaired by the Secretary of the VA, Denis  McDonough. He is also a 5-year member of the “100 Black Men of Austin, Texas organization.

In 2013, Glenn became a National Gold Medalist of the VA CREATIVE ARTS FESTIVAL  held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin representing California. As an artist, Glenn’s paintings and  wood burns have been exhibited in several museums and at the UTSA Institute of Texan  Cultures, a Smithsonian Affiliated museum in San Antonio, Texas as part of the ART SPARKS  Texas Veterans Program. He has also exhibited during AVAFEST 2018 through 2024. In 2020,  his art was selected to be a part of the National “John Lewis, GOOD TROUBLE EXHIBIT” which created posters of five of his paintings and displayed them in cities throughout the United  States with messages designed to get out the vote for the national election. Glenn Towery is also  a proud member of the Georgetown, Texas Rotary Club. He takes immense pride in being a  Rotarian.
